If you are visiting Mallorca in May, Sabors de la Badia, the Tuna Festival, is one of the most exciting gastronomic events to enjoy in Port de Pollença. Set beside the sea, this two-day celebration brings together local chefs, Mallorcan wineries, live music, family activities and the spectacular tradition of live tuna cutting and auction.
Taking place on Saturday 23 May and Sunday 24 May, the festival is a wonderful opportunity to experience the flavours of the bay, with tuna caught in Balearic waters at its heart.
Sabors de la Badia celebrates the culinary richness of Port de Pollença, with a special focus on tuna from Balearic waters. Throughout the weekend, visitors can enjoy live tuna cutting demonstrations, charity auctions of the carved tuna, gastronomic workshops with well-known chefs, wine pairings from local wineries, tuna tapas from participating restaurants, children's activities, live music in the square, and oceanographic workshops and information stands.
The auctions also have a charitable purpose, with proceeds donated to social organisations in Pollença.
One of the highlights of the festival is the live tuna cutting, hosted by Toni Fiol from Blue Fin Balear. The carved tuna will then be auctioned, with three sponsored tuna sessions across the weekend:
Saturday 23 May at 11:30
First tuna sponsored by Rotary Club
Location: Passeig de Saralegui marquee
Saturday 23 May at 17:30
Second tuna sponsored by Enjoy Pollensa, Pollensa Hotel Association
Location: Passeig de Saralegui marquee
Sunday 24 May at 11:30
Third tuna sponsored by Licors Moyà
Location: Passeig de Saralegui marquee
These demonstrations are not only impressive to watch, but also offer a fascinating insight into the skill, tradition and gastronomy surrounding bluefin tuna in Mallorca.
From 12:00 onwards on both Saturday and Sunday, visitors can taste tapas made with tuna caught in Balearic waters. Participating restaurants include Miceli, U Vicenç, 2Kanallas, La Cantina del Moll Nou, Corb Marí, Stay, Shima by Four Seasons Formentor, Iru, Terrae, Bodega Can Ferrà, Club Nàutic and La Llonja.
This is a perfect way to sample some of the best cooking in the north of Mallorca in a relaxed, seaside setting.
