Restrictions return to the Formentor Peninsula

The transit restrictions have been reannounced to the Formentor peninsula (Ma-2210), an initiative first launched with a pilot plan in 2018 and was suspended in 2020 due to the pandemic. However, this year the restrictions return and there is a nuance, the road restricted has been extended. The limits apply between 15th June and 15th September between 10 am - 7 pm. If you have visited in recent years, before the restrictions, you will have seen how busy and chaotic the road can get, so the authorities have brought the rules into place to increase safety, reduce the pressures on infrastructure, and protect the natural beauty of the area.

This year, there is a slight change to the rules from previous years. Now, the access is restricted from Puerto Pollensa. This means that access to Formentor from the roundabout by the football pitch can only be done by public transport, authorised vehicles, on foot, by bike or the emergency services.

The councillor for Mobility & Infrastructure, Iván Sevillano, explains that the restrictions were not in place last year due the pandemic, but that this year they have brought the measures back in as the area is of great importance to the environment and landscape. This year also celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Serra Tramuntana being declared a UNESCO world heritage site.

There will be a barrier at the beach to prevent any drivers from accessing the lighthouse and popup controls. Any drivers caught driving on the road during the restricted hours will be fined €200.

How to access the Formentor Lighthouse

If the Formentor lighthouse is still on your to-do list of sights to see while you are visiting the area, then worry not, the lighthouse can still be accessed by taking the bus from the main bus stop in Port de Pollença.

There will be two bus lines, the 333 (Alcudia - Port de Pollença - Formentor beach) and the 334 (Alcudia - Port de Pollença - Formentor beach - Cala Figuera/Cala Murta - Lighthouse).

Both the 333 and the 334 will stop at the viewpoint of es Colomer, with the 333 bus stopping at the beach before heading back to town. The 334, however, will continue, making stops at the beaches of Cala Figuera & Cala Murta as well as the lighthouse.

Further information can be found on the Consell de Mallorca website and the shuttle bus timetable on the TIB website.
