Resident Travel Discount after Brexit

Suppose you're a resident of the Balearic Islands from the UK. In that case, you may be wondering where you stand with regards to the travel discount now that the Brexit transition period is over.

What is the island travel discount?
The current fare discount is set at 75% between the islands and 50% between the islands and other national territories. The Real Decreto 1316/2001, de 30 de noviembre regulates this discount. It refers to the travel of residents of the autonomous regions of the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands and Ceuta & Melilla.

It means you can find yourself a flight for as cheap as 10€ to the mainland and was brought about to keep the islands connected to the rest of the country.

Who is entitled to the discount?
To be valid for the discount, you must be resident (on the padrón) in one of the islands mentioned above and also one of the following:

The Brits living in Mallorca come under the last category on the list there. Meaning to qualify for the discount, you must be a permanent resident, either with the green NIE stating 'permanente' or with the TIE card.

Discount applied at the end of the ticket purchase:
You may have heard the travel discount discussed in the news as of late. This is because the consumer organisation, Consubal, has denounced several airlines and travel companies. They have been wrongly requesting customers to state if they are island residents before showing the fare price. This has led to the suspicion that fare prices are being modified to accommodate the airlines' discount.
